Christmas Letter 2009

Merry Christmas friends and family!

We hope the close of 2009 finds you all healthy, wealthy and wise. We continue to enjoy Arizona sunshine. We have also gained a much greater appreciation of the gift of family this year. We are grateful for the Christmas season, our Savior Jesus Christ, and God’s many tender mercies in our lives. Here’s wishing we could visit with and see all of you much more often – happy 2010!

Love, The Mathesons – Alex, Julie, Bradley, Carter, Lydia & Eve

p.s. If you’re up for it, the slightly more extended version of our year is included below.

Eve (1 ½) probably made the most progress of all of us this year. She has doubled in size, changed from a quadruped to a biped, become bilingual (speaks Evelish, understands English) and the scope of her appetite has broadened from a single food product to just about anything her little hands can get a hold of and her teeth can munch up. Lastly, if this is possible, she has gotten exponentially cuter.

Lydia (a very grown up 3 ½) has recently decided to be her own hair dresser. Her latest ‘do’ is very vogue (large chunk of hair missing from the front and back). She has a lot of “good ideas” – most of which focus on creative ways to get Mom or Dad to take her to McDonalds, turn on the TV, invite a friend over or play hide-and-seek. She is a princess to the core and loves playing with her sister and brothers.

Carter (6) played basketball for the first time this year. He was a tenacious defender. He also (along with the rest of our family) thoroughly enjoyed braving Slide Rock (Sedona, AZ), hiking and camping at the Gila Cliff Dwellings (New Mexico), and seeing the Grand Canyon. Carter is a great student and is always ready for an adventure in life. He’s very proud to be able to officially sing “All I Want for Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth” this Christmas season.

Bradley’s big news this year is that he turned 8 and was baptized. He also loves going to Cub Scouts, reading lots of books and is an outstanding student at school. Both he and Carter enjoy watching games (any game) with Grandpa Matheson, riding horses at Grandpa Paul’s and playing football and soccer with Dad in the backyard.

Julie has been busy once again with quilting, gardening, raising children and other various and sundry projects. She and her friend, Martha, get together often to exchange sewing, cooking and decorating ideas. They used to exchange ideas about buying and selling shares in companies but that has become a sore subject so for the sake of the friendship they don’t talk about it any more. (Rebuttal: Please remember that in previous letters Julie also started a Save the Water Buffalo foundation in Southeast Asia and drooled on Bob Barker’s lapel. In the immortal words of George Strait, “If you’ll buy that I’ll throw the Golden Gate in free.”)

Alex’s garage band has officially begun. He started taking guitar lessons this year and his melodious tunes continue to make Julie swoon. He thoroughly enjoys pulling people’s teeth out and whatever else it is that he does down there all day at the office. But just in case the dentistry thing doesn’t work out he’s been working on his 70’s Club clothing line. So far he’s completed the slogan: Comfortable Clothes for Comfortable People (that may have been borrowed from a previous life). U of A sports is keeping him happier than usual. Go Wildcats!
